ISO 27000 Series of Standards

What is the ISO/IEC 27000 family of information security standards?

The ISO 27000 family of information security management standards is a series of mutually supporting information security standards that can be combined to provide a globally recognised framework for best-practice information security management.

The mainstay of the series is ISO 27001, which sets out the specification for an ISMS (information security management system).

The series is developed and published by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission).

ISO 27001 and ISO 27002 2022 updates

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 – the newest version of ISO 27001 – was published in October 2022.

Organisations that are certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2013 have a three-year transition period to make the necessary changes to their ISMS (information security management system).

ISO standards development process

ISO standards follow a six-step development process before publication:

  1. Proposal stage (obligatory)
  2. Preparatory stage
  3. Committee stage
  4. Enquiry stage (obligatory)
  5. Approval stage
  6. Publication stage (obligatory)

At each stage in a standard’s development, it is given an abbreviation to denote its status. Common abbreviations include:

  • PWI: Preliminary work item
  • NP/NWIP: New proposal/new work item proposal
  • AWI: Approved new work item
  • WD: Working draft
  • CD: Committee draft
  • FCD: Final committee draft
  • DIS: Draft international standard
  • FDIS: Final draft international standard
  • PRF: Proof of a new international standard
  • IS: International standard
