Who should use this standard?
Organisations of any size and type that want to:
- Implement an OH&S management system to improve health and safety within the workplace, and effectively manage occupational risks and hazards;
- Increase awareness of health and safety risks and increase employee involvement in identifying and dealing with those risks; and/or
- Achieve certification to demonstrate to stakeholders that the organisation takes occupational health and safety seriously.
Why use this standard?
- Compatible with popular management systems standards such as ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 27001 (information security management), ISO 45001 can be easily integrated into existing management systems.
- It helps organisations provide a healthy, safe working environment, boosting employee morale and reducing costs.
- It assists compliance with a range of occupational health and safety legislation.
What’s changed since the last update?
ISO 45001 replaces OHSAS 18001:2007.
This latest revision aligns the Standard to Annex SL (the common format for management system standards), allowing easy integration with other management systems.
It also places greater focus on:
- Consultation and participation of workers in the operation of the OH&S management system, especially in respect of identifying and eliminating risks and hazards within the workplace;
- Accountability and leadership provided by top management in respect of OH&S risks and hazards and the operation of the management system; and
- OH&S roles and responsibilities throughout the organisation.
