UK fire and rescue authorities told to have business continuity plans

In a written Parliamentary statement, published on 8th November 2010, Bob Neill (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Communities and Local Government) said that all UK fire and rescue authorities should have business continuity plans.

Bob Neill stated that: “The two [Fire Brigades Union] strikes witnessed in London on the 23 October and 1 November, highlighted the need for all fire and rescue authorities to have in place robust business continuity plans which allow them to continue to provide a service to the public during a range of different types of disruption. I would encourage all fire and rescue authorities to satisfy themselves that they have such plans in place and to continue to strengthen these where necessary.”

Cambridge Fire Service first to achieve certification to the BS 25999 business continuity management standard.

This is a significant achievement, encompassing 50 sites that all maintain their own Business Continuity Plans.

Cambridge Fire were also the first UK fire service to achieve certification to the ISO/IEC 27001 Information Security Management standard and this recent achievement further demonstrates their position as a leading fire and rescue service with a commitment to high integrity standards throughout their operations.

Importance of BS25999 for Public and Private organisations:

In the UK, the NHS has determined that BS25999 certification is a key way for NHS entities to demonstrate that they are adequately resilient, and UK local authorities have recognised the BS25999 certification is the best method possible for demonstrating they are meeting their obligations under the Civil Contingencies Act.

Internationally, organisations in both the public and private sector are pursuing BS25999 certification in order to demonstrate to stakeholders and customers that they have adequate business resilience arrangements in place.
