The SRA (Solicitors Regulation Authority) has issued a warning about emails that falsely claim to be from London law firm Herbert Smith Freehills LLP.
The SRA advised that such emails had been sent to a number of organisations. The emails relate to legal work apparently carried out by the sender and refer to an attached legal expenses invoice. The attachments were reported to include a fee summary and bank details for payment to be made. The emails asked recipients to make a same-day payment and then confirm with the sender.
The SRA reported that the emails appear to have been sent from the following email addresses:
The SRA also confirmed that the emails do not relate to work undertaken by a solicitors’ practice, nor an individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
The genuine law firm Herbert Smith Freehills LLP has confirmed that it does not have any connection with these emails.
For many reasons, law firms are an attractive target for cyber criminals. Organised fraudsters are targeting firms in a number of impersonation scams, including mandate fraud, as described above. Individuals and organisations should remain vigilant and watch out for business impersonation scams.
