Find out how to pick the best training course and qualification to advance your cyber security career.
The cyber security industry has boomed in the past decade, providing fantastic opportunities for those interested in rewarding work that pays well and gives you room to grow.
But with so many cyber security qualifications to choose from, it’s hard to decide which is most appropriate. There’s no one right answer, so we’ve provided some advice to help you figure out what’s best for you.
Choosing your career path
Training courses are generally tailored to specific careers, so the first thing you need to decide is what aspect of cyber security interests you most.
A good question to get started with is ‘What sort of day-to-day routine do I want?’ Do you want the security of a desk job? Do you want hands-on work? Are you interested in travelling? Do you think you’d make a good manager?
The cyber security industry is incredibly broad, and there are plenty of jobs that meet each of these criteria.
An equally important question is ‘What jobs would I be good at?’ For example, if you have strong attention to detail, you’d be well-suited for auditing. If you’re good at programming, you should consider security software development or ethical hacking.
If you’re unsure what job roles align with your skills, try typing the skill and ‘cyber security’ into a job search site. This will also give you an idea of the job description and the average salary.
Gaining the necessary qualification
Cyber security is, perhaps more than any industry, knowledge- and skills-based, and as such, you will almost always be expected to have a relevant qualification.
The good news is that, once you’ve identified your ideal job role, it’s relatively straightforward to pick out the relevant qualification. IT Governance’s learning pathway categorises every major qualification into relevant subject areas and level of expertise. The even better news is that we offer a wide variety of training courses that each include a written exam and the chance to gain accredited certification.
For those who can’t attend classroom-based courses, or who simply prefer the flexibility of studying from home, we offer distance learning and Live Online versions of many of our courses.
