There have been a couple more stories hitting the news this week regarding breaches of the Data Protection Act. The Information Commissioner Office (ICO) confirmed that Co-operative Life Planning breached the data protection act in March of this year after 82,000 customers details were published on-line. The instance occurred when a contractor failed to adhere to the companies’ security procedure. An electronic file containing customer information was being repaired by the contractor. However, when it was stored on the contractor’s own server, the file was hacked and 82,000 personal records were published on-line.
In separate incidents, the Midlands based charities Children and Carers Together and Wheelbase Motor Project, both fell foul of the ICO after laptops containing personal data were stolen. Both charities had failed to encrypt the computers and sensitive information about was compromised.
Here at IT Governance we take data protection very seriously. Don’t run the risk of incurring the ICO’s wrath, damaging your brand and potentially incurring crippling fines.
Our Complete DPA Protection Toolkit offers an affordable and comprehensive resource to ensure that your organisation complies with the Data Protection Act.
Taking control of your data really isn’t that difficult. Failure to do so, however, means that it isn’t a case of ‘if’ your organisation gets caught out, it’s a case of ‘when’.
