My colleague, Jamie Titchener, recently published a blog post making a point that large organisations are bad at business continuity. Sadly, I have to agree with him based on similar negative experience I have had with my Internet service provider – my Internet has been down a couple of times for more than 30 minutes. I couldn’t rely on their Internet service when I needed it most and this made me a very unhappy customer… I now know that when I choose a provider in the future if they can prove that they are resilient, they’ll be my preferred choice over a provider with no business continuity credentials.
If my Internet provider loses me as a customer, perhaps they’ll lose just a few hundred pounds, but scale this up and you get a much bigger figure. Think about an organisation that can lose a contract worth millions of pounds if they fail to deliver a service due to business disruption. Could this mean the end of them?
|Fortunately, there are examples of large (and small) organisations that seem to take business continuity and resilience seriously. Vodafone UK and O2 Telefónica UK Limited are among those. They have implemented a business continuity management system (BCMS) and consequently achieved certification to ISO 22301, the international business continuity standard. I was pleased to discover that there are small companies like Lettergold Plastics Ltd that have also achieved certification to ISO 22301. These companies care!|
