How much do you know about information security and new data privacy law?

As new technologies became a part of day-to-day business operations, the ability to access data 24/7 made information-sharing process much easier. The risk of loosing data, however, increased mercilessly. Having corporate information compromised, brought about an extra worry for security managers and CIOs globally.

Earlier this year, Indian Government released new regulations on data privacy, which relates to any company that collects information within the country. These state regulations require companies to ensure private data stays private. Not complying with this new Act can result in fines, damaged reputation and even loss of revenue.

Ensuring that information is simultaneously protected and available to those who need it, is essential to national and international business operations. Therefore, information security management systems (ISMSs) and procedural controls constitute essential elements of any secure information system and, to be effective, need careful planning and attention to detail.

ISO/IEC 27001:2005 is an international standard for ISMSs. This standard, which is closely allied to ISO/IEC 17799:2005 (also known as 27002), helps organisations meet all their information-related regulatory compliance objectives, and helps them prepare and position themselves for new and emerging regulations.
