Cyber Attacks Effect Everyone – Even The Police
Last week the Arizona State Police again became the victim of a cyber attack. The hack was announced on Twitter by a group affiliated with the Anonymous group, less than a week after an attack from Lulz Security.
Information from 12 police officers was stolen and included names, addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, online dating account information, chat logs, internal police reports and email chains.
This latest incident continues the proliferation of cyber attacks we’ve seen in 2011. In recent months such high prolife organizations including Fox, Sony, Gmail, the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and major government departments have all been attacked.
These are the stories that hit the news. However, there are plenty more businesses and individuals that have suffered at the hands of hackers. Cyber security is an issue for everyone. Indeed it of such importance that President Obama made a speech on May 29th about ‘Securing Our Nation’s Cyber Infrastructure’.
In the speech the President stated:
“It’s the great irony of our Information Age – the very technologies that empower us to create and to build also empower those who would disrupt and destroy.”
The President made reference to the millions of Americans who had been victimized, had their privacy violated and identities stolen. He cited a survey which put the cost of cyber crime to Americans at $8 billion in the last 2 years.
“But every day we see waves of cyber thieves trolling for sensitive information — the disgruntled employee on the inside, the lone hacker a thousand miles away, organized crime, the industrial spy and, increasingly, foreign intelligence services.(…) It’s been estimated that last year alone cyber criminals stole intellectual property from businesses worldwide worth up to $1 trillion.
In short, America’s economic prosperity in the 21st century will depend on cybersecurity.”
