A recent report conducted by Erasmus University on behalf of the British Standards Institution has discovered that information security is finally being considered as a critical business issue. The survey of 645 businesses in America, Europe, Australia and Asia found that 72% of businesses were worried about the financial damage of cybercrime.
The threat of cyber crime, corporate espionage, network attack and the theft or loss of data are just some of the issues that worried respondents. 2011 has seen an unprecedented amount of cyber crime and businesses are waking up to the fact that protection of their critical assets is an issue that must be addressed.
Notably those surveyed which had achieved ISO27001 certification, the international standard for an information security management system, reported a reduction of 39% in security incidents. Interestingly 78% of those who implemented ISO27001 did so from the senior management team down, and 92% of those surveyed stated that board support was critical to the protection of information assets.
