The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has confirmed that it is investigating Essex Council over the possible leak of up to 400 local patients. The council has informed the individuals and the ICO is investigating whether the Data Protection Act (DPA) has been breached.
The incident centres on the personal details – names, addresses and financial information of patients receiving care – being sent outside of the council’s computer network.
The potential breach is not being treated as malicious, however it further highlights that DPA breaches can often happen when DPA training and policies are not put in place within an organisation.
