The ITGP Team makes the case for taking on new titles at regular publishing workshops. These are attended by the CEO, the Publishing Manager and the Sales and Marketing Team.
There are essentially two ways we find pocket guides, books and tools to pursue:
- We identify a topic and call for authors
- Authors approach us with a proposal
All prospective authors complete a short proposal document that describes what the pocket guide, book or toolkit will be about, and identifies the target market. All proposals are discussed on a monthly basis by the ITGP Team and prospective authors advised of the decision.
The Contract
Once a proposal is accepted, authors are sent our standard draft contact. We then agree a submission date and ratify the agreement.
The manuscript
Authors are sent our Author’s Guide and the relevant pre-formatted Writing Template, into which they flow their Word document. The author sends the finished manuscript, in this format, to ITGP by an agreed due date. The manuscript is then sent out for review to industry experts and the author advised of reviewer’s comments for amendment.
The final manuscript will always be copy edited, and we arrange this as part of the book creation process. This is an extremely important stage, designed to catch any errors and/or inconsistencies in the text, including spelling, punctuation and grammatical issues. This stage is also used to ensure consistency with the ITGP house style – a consistently high standard of presentation, helping establish ITGP products as an attractive proposition within the book trade.
Whilst the manuscript is being copy edited, a designer will be working on the book’s cover image – a crucial stage in the products development. We work closely with the designer to ensure that the essence of the book is captured in the cover, and that it will stand out on website pages and bookshelves across the globe.
ITGP uses various printers around the world. We usually print and hold stock in the UK, Europe and USA, where we have warehouses. Although we don’t hold stock elsewhere, we can print and supply our titles anywhere in the world. Financial models are drawn up for each pocket guide or book that goes to press. This enables us to select the best printing rate per copy, so that each tightly-budgeted book as the opportunity to make money for both the author and ourselves.
In addition to publishing our titles in a paperback printed format, we also make them available in e-book format. A combination of in house e-capabilities and third party technology means we can produce our titles in a multiple digital formats, including PDF, Adobe eBook, ePub and Mobi eBook. As a result of making ITGP titles available in various electronic formats, we are able to open up even more channels to market, including e-libraries, which serve both the academic and corporate markets.
Typically, authors get paid a set percentage of the book price, each time we sell a copy. These royalties are accumulated and paid twice a year.
The sales and marketing department of ITGP work closely with all of our authors. This includes developing and coordinating press releases and e-mail newsletters, attending and exhibiting at conferences, and arranging reviews in industry magazines and journals. We also promote the book via social media channels including LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, and establish relationships with the relevant professional associations and other websites that can promote the book to their audiences.
All titles are listed on Nielsen; the world’s largest resource for accurate, up-to-date and detailed book advertising information. These activities and a high degree of local author support, enable us to make sure the book is marketed fully to the correct audiences.
From proposal, through to publication and beyond, our quality production process, industry expert review process, along with 21st century printing techniques and unique cover designs make ITGP your publisher of choice.
