ISO50001 (ISO 50001) Energy Management Systems - Requirements
ISO 50001:2011 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system (EMS). The purpose of this EMS is to enable an organisation to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption.
The standard specifies requirements applicable to energy use and consumption, including:
- Measurement
- Documentation and reporting
- Design and procurement practices for equipment
- Systems
- Processes and personnel that contribute to energy performance
ISO 50001:2011 has been designed to be used independently, but it can be aligned or integrated with other management systems.
ISO 50001:2011 is applicable to any organisation wishing to ensure that it conforms to its stated energy policy and wishing to demonstrate this to others. Such conformity being confirmed either by means of self-evaluation and self-declaration of conformity, or by certification of the EMS by an external organisation.
The standard is intended to accomplish the following:
- Assist organisations in making better use of their existing energy-consuming assets
- Create transparency and facilitate communication on the management of energy resources
- Promote energy management best practices and reinforce good energy management behaviours
- Assist facilities in evaluating and prioritising the implementation of new energy-efficient technologies

- Facilitate energy management improvements for greenhouse gas emission reduction projects
- Allow integration with other organisational management systems such as environmental, and health and safety.
