ITIL®v3 Qualifications Scheme
Official, detailed final guidance on the new ITILv3 qualification scheme was released in November 2007.
The ITIL Accreditor has also published a graphic and easy-to-understand presentation of how the qualifications relate to one another, what the requirements are, and how ITILv2 certifications contribute to achieving ITILv3 qualifications.
While ITILv2 qualifications will continue to be valid they, obviously, will not be appropriate for organizations and individuals starting now to implement ITILv3.
Essentially, there are three levels of ITILv3 professional certification:
- ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management
- ITIL Service Management Expert
- ITIL Advanced Level
ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management
This is the entry level ITILv3 qualification. Its purpose is to certify that the candidate has gained knowledge of the ITIL terminology, structure and basic concepts and has comprehended the core principles of ITIL practices for Service Management.
The ITILv3 Foundation Certificate exam is a 60-minute, 40-question multiple choice exam which does not require (although it is strongly recommended) accredited Foundation training as a pre-requisite. Exam options are online, at the end of a training course, or via an Examination Institute's Public Exam Scheme.
Candidates who wish to convert a V2 to a V3 qualification have two options:
- Pass the ITILv3 Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management Examination, or
- Pass the V2 - V3 ITIL Foundation Bridge exam - please note that there is a mandatory accredited course attendance requirement before you can sit this examination.
ITILv3 Foundation Bridge Courses
There are two options for converting an ITILv2 Foundation certificate to an ITILv3 Foundation certificate:
- Attend on of our ITILv3 Bridge Courses and then sit and pass the Bridge Exam (quicker than going through the expense and time requirements of re-qualifying for the ITIL Foundation Certificate);
- Take our computer-based ITILv3 Foundation Bridge Course, study in your own time, and take the Bridge exam through an accredited examiner.

For those who wish to pursue the full ITILv3 Foundation Certificate, there are two options:
- Classroom training - either book on our popular ITILv3 Foundation course or select one from our extensive UK-wide range of ITILv3 Foundation training venues and courses, and
- Distance learning - our computer-based accredited ITILv3 Foundation Course is equivalent to the three-day classroom course, and enables you to get started right away.

Passing the ITILv3 Foundation exam is what it's all about. You can either rely completely on the Official ITILv3 Foundation Study Aid, or you can invest in our new ITILv3 Foundation Study Kit, which contains everything you need to virtually guarantee that you pass first time!
ITIL SERVICE MANAGEMENT EXPERT
No examination is required for this level. It is achieved by accumulating a minimum 22 credits through the Foundation and Intermediate levels of the ITILv3 Qualifications Scheme. Two credits must be from the ITILv3 Foundation certificate (the mandatory first step) and five must be from the 'Managing Across the Lifecycle' module, which is the mandatory last step. The other the other 15 credits can be accumulated by choosing 'Capability' modules (4 credits each) or 'Lifecyle' modules (4 credits).
The ITILv1 or V2 Managers Certificate is worth 17 credits and ITILv3 Expert status can therefore be achieved simply by attending the mandatory ITILv3 Managers Bridge Course, which is worth 5 credits.
