ITIL Update 2011

ITIL is a constantly evolving framework for the implementation of best practice in the field of IT service management.

The core OGC titles within the ITIL V3 publications suite have recently undergone some updates as part of the OGC's cyclical programme to update its core ITIL guidance in line with the latest developments in IT Service Management.

The updated version of ITIL v3 was announced on 22 June 2011, and the biggest wholesale change in the methodology is the review of the Service Strategy publication.

Based on user feedback, the guidance in this particular title has been thoroughly overhauled. It was felt that, out of all the five core titles, Service Strategy was in need of the most attention. The core concepts in the manual have remained the same, as they will in all the other core books, but the terminology employed and how they are explained are what makes this update an essential purchase for every ITIL organisation.

The update does not make the guidance more complex. It is designed to ensure that the books relate more clearly to one another, anomalies are corrected and the content is conveyed in a clear and concise manner.

What Version of ITIL Is This?

This is not ITIL version 4 or ITIL version 3.1, it is an update to ITIL version 3 to make it more useable.

It is all about improving consistency, accessibility and usability of the core publications. The update has removed inconsistencies in content and structure. In Service Strategy particularly, explanations have been made more straightforward and accessible where appropriate.

Does This Update Stay In Line With The Principles of ITIL 2007?

Yes. The purity of the concepts has been maintained from the 2007 editions. All the authors of the 2007 editions have been involved in the continuity between the editions.

Previous Versions of ITIL

When the update is released ITIL version 1 will no longer be in existence and version 2 will removed from the market over a period of time. The core publications will therefore be referred to as ITIL. To distinguish between the 2007 and 2011 editions the latest edition will carry the ‘2011 Edition’ logo.

How Will The Update Benefit The End User?

The updated publications are easier to read and understand. They have addressed previous errors and inconsistencies and issues raised in the Change Control Log and issues raised by trainers. The primary focus of the project was to respond to the feedback and requirements of users, and then provide an improved product.

What Effect Will The Update Have On Qualifications?

Inevitably, the changes to the ITIL text and diagrams will cascade to training materials, but only to simplify and improve them. There is no intention at this time to change either the qualification structure or the scope of each qualification because of the update. Existing certificates that individuals hold will not become out of date because the concepts, roles and processes are not changing; only the descriptions of them will be improved.

Important information about the ITIL Exams

Because of the ITIL 2011 updates, the syllabus documents, including the book references, have been updated and aligned for the ITIL exams. Because of the August release of ITIL 2011 and the effective date of the new exams in January 2012, a transition period has been established.

Between 8 August 2011 and January 1 2012 a set of hybrid exams are in operation. Therefore, there are exams matched to the courses developed for the 2007 edition of the relevant syllabus, and the courses developed against the new 2011 edition of the syllabus.

On January 1 a new set of exams will come into existence. These exams will be fully aligned with the 2011 version of the syllabus documents and will reference material only from ITIL 2011.
