Put more directly:
- IT governance ensures your IT puts you ahead of the competition
- IT governance gives your customers confidence in your systems
- IT governance makes sure you comply with the law
- IT governance helps keep your projects running to time, to budget and to scope
But it’s incredible how little board-level folk tend to understand about the subject.
Ask them if their IT strategy and processes are aligned to the organisational strategy and you’ll most likely get an “of course!” But then ask them to explain their IT governance framework and you’ll probably be directed to the IT manager.
It’s in their interest to know this stuff. Unless your IT resources are 100% aligned to your organisational strategy, you cannot hope to achieve optimal efficiency or profitability. And that alignment won’t happen without absolute board backing.

2. Get their buy-in
Now the board understand the benefits (financial and strategic) of taking IT governance seriously, you’ll probably need to explain the next steps to them.

As we said above, the key to effective IT governance is making sure those at the top are engaged, informed and committed.

To be honest, you probably won’t find the path to this point as simple and quick as this list implies, but with some luck (and a little salesmanship) you should get the nod to start your project.
